Hi everyone, my name is Sandy Johansen and I am the School Counselor at Yellow Springs. Many parents did not have School Counselors in elementary school so the following information may explain a little bit about what I do. School Counselors do lots of things in schools to help children and families.
The School Counseling Program at Yellow Springs is designed to help children get the best possible education. A good education means learning to read, write and do math but it also means learning to get along with others and work together. Learning to work well with others or social skills include making good decisions, controlling anger, accepting responsibility and being aware of personal strengths and weaknesses.
I teach lessons to all the grades using the Frederick County School Counseling Curriculum. These lessons may include information about career goals, dealing with friends and bullying, managing time and getting school work done. You may see some of my lesson posters when you visit your child’s classroom.
Each year I run small groups to help students with specific issues. In the past we have had groups that dealt with, changing families, illness or death in the family, new friends club, cool cats (controlling anger and frustration), friendship groups (social skills), and getting organized for school. Please let me know if there’s a group that might help your child.
I am available for short term one-on-one counseling and support for students experiencing emotional difficulties that interfere with their learning. If a child continues to have problems parents may want to ask for appropriate community resources for longer term counseling.
Yellow Springs collected $509.75 for UNICEF in 2010. We collected $652.58 in 2011 beating last years total by $142.83! Thank-you Yellow Spring Eagles for supporting this important program.
