Black-Eyed Susan Book Information [1]

The 4th and 5th graders are invited to participate in a state sponsored reading program, the Black Eyed Susan Book Award. Our purpose is to promote literacy and life-long reading habits by encouraging students to read quality, contemporary literature.  The selected books that are placed on the state list are expected to broaden the human experience and provide accurate, factual information. The BES Book Award honors outstanding books, chosen annually by Maryland Students.

To participate in this optional program, students must choose 3 books from the attached list to read between August 2017 and April 2018. After completing a book, students take a short quiz based on the Black-Eyed Susan book. All students completing at least 3 books will be invited to a Black-Eyed Susan celebration next May.

When the required number of books (minimum of 3) has been read, each student will cast one vote for the book s/he considers to be the most outstanding. Votes from across the state are sent to the BES committee and tallied to determine the winner. Authors, illustrators, and publishers recognize the award as an honor bestowed by Maryland students.
