Bullying Prevention Program begins at Walkersville Middle School

All schools deal with the issue of bullying. Walkersville Middle School recently won the highest level of Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) in Maryland, the PBIS Maryland GOLD Recognition Award. As part of the PBIS program Walkersville Middle School is proud to announce the launch of the OLWEUS Bullying Prevention Program, an anti-bullying program with proactive steps to stop and prevent bullying. This research-based schoolwide “systems-change” program has been used successfully in schools all over the country and around the world with positive results. This program is not a curriculum that students participate in for only a few weeks. Rather, it is a coordinated effort by all the adults in the school to supervise and intervene when any bullying happens. As part of the program, students participate in regular class meetings to learn about the effects of bullying, what they can do about it, and how they can work with adults at school to put a stop to it even as bystanders. These meetings will fit nicely into our already strong co-curricular program. Implementing the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is a long-term commitment to making Walkersville Middle School a safer, more positive place to be. Students and staff will participate in interactive activities and the community will have the opportunity to get involved to further support the OLWEUS Bullying Prevention Program and the PBIS team.
