What is PBIS?
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports
Data-driven system that focuses on positives to guide discipline.
Whittier Heroes show that we are safe, ready, responsible and polite by:
1. Following directions the first time they are given.
2. Using appropriate words and actions.
3. Keeping our body and objects in our own space.
4. Talking at appropriate times.
5. Completing assignments and participating in all learning experiences.

Homework:

· Students will be able to complete their homework in a journal. Homework will be assigned monthly. At the end of every month students will return their journals to be reviewed.

· Students will have math facts to help build their math fact fluency. Please review these nightly to help your child master them.

·
Around the same time we will be sending home student reading baggies. The books that come home will be the same books we work on in reading groups. We recommend that you read with your child for at least 10 minutes every night. Students will record their reading minutes in their journals this year. For every 300 minutes they read they will earn a reading dog tag.

Attendance/Absences:
Students should be in class by 8:45 am so that they have ample time to get ready for the day. The school day begins at 8:50 am and ends at 3:25 pm.If your child is sick, please send in a note explaining their absence. If your child is late for school please stop in the office to check them in.

Communication:
If you send in a note please ensure that it is placed in their take home folder. We ask that you check your child’s take home folders every evening for important papers. Please note that the Common Core promotes student independence. This means students need to come into the classroom and unpack their bags on their own. We will model this the first few weeks of school.Visit our classroom website and read the weekly emails to see what we are doing at school!

Field trips:
This year we will be going on two field trips along with The Earth, Space and Science Lab ESSL. In the September, we will go to Butler's Orchard to pick apples and in May we will go to Rosehill Manor.

Volunteer Opportunities:
We would love to have you work in our classroom!  Here are some ways to support our classroom: working with small groups of students, chaperoning field trips and special events, and stuffing Thursday folders, laminating, putting away little books and preparing materials. Another great way to support our classroom is to join the PTA!  Please contact me if you are interested in volunteering!
