Dear Whittier Elementary Families,
Welcome to another school year! Hopefully your summer has been restful and enjoyable and you’re excited about the start of a brand new school year! I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Mary Beth Smith and I am the new assistant principal at Whittier Elementary School. I am delighted to be joining your community.
A little about myself…I began my teaching career in 1995 in Fairfax County, Virginia as a middle school special education teacher. During the years that I worked there, I was fortunate enough to teach in several different environments, including a specialized program for children with severe emotional disabilities. When my family relocated to Frederick County, I joined the staff at Deer Crossing Elementary as a special education teacher. I eventually moved to Waverley Elementary as a teacher, Tuscarora Elementary as acting assistant principal, then Middletown Primary School as assistant principal. I feel very fortunate to be placed at Whittier Elementary to start the next chapter in my career.
Personally, I am a very proud graduate of Michigan State University and travel to football games there when I can. I earned my Master’s degree in special education from George Mason University and a separate certification in educational leadership from Hood College. Because I love to teach, I also serve as an adjunct faculty member at Frederick Community College. My husband (Barry) and I live in New Market and have four children. We are animal lovers and also have two Golden Retrievers and three cats.
Again, I am thrilled to be part of the Whittier community. When you’re in the building, please come by and introduce yourself. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year!
Mary Beth Smith
