My name is Linda Barnes and this is my 15th year teaching EL in FCPS and my 12th year teaching at Whittier Elementary School. I am originally from Italy. I moved to the United States in 2003. In Italy I earned an undergraduate and graduate degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures (I studied English, French, and German), and I have a Master of Science degree in Education and ESL (English as a Second Language) from the George Washington University.
I became an EL teacher because I enjoy working with students who come from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. I feel that I can relate to my students because of my own experiences coming from a different country and having to adjust to live in a new one. I also had to experience firsthand the process of learning a new language with its nuances, idioms, and cultural references.
As an EL teacher I am aware of the challenges my students have to face, and I want to make sure they have the support and background knowledge they need to succeed in school. As a result, I work closely with the classroom teachers to ensure students are getting the specialized instruction and vocabulary they need to improve in all content areas.
I live in Frederick with my husband and my three children: Daniel (10), Julia (7), and Sofia who was born in February 2020. I love traveling, and I usually go back to Italy to see my family in the summer. I also love hiking, riding my bike, and walking my dogs.
I am very excited to get to know your family and to work with your child this year.
