PHYSICAL EDUCATION EXPECTATIONS

1.  Walk into the Gym quietly.

2.  When whistle blows/music stops, students will stop, sit, look, and listen for directions.

3.  Dress appropriately.

4.  One speaker at a time.

5.  Raise hand to speak.

CONSEQUENCES

The following system is used in the case that students are unable to abide by classroom rules.  These were put together in order to maintain a safe and active learning environment for all students and teachers.

1.  Strike 1:  student will remove themselves from the activity area, think about the choice they made and the choice they should have made, and then re-enter themselves in the activity when they are ready (should not take any longer than 30 seconds).

2.  Strike 2:  same as Strike 1.  This time the student will wait for Coach to discuss the situation and help find a solution to the problem.  Once the situation has been resolved, then the Coach will inform the student when to re-enter the activity.

3.  Strike 3:  same as Strike 2.  This time the student is removed from the activity for the duration.

*A student may receive a Strike 2 or 3 the first time based on the severity of the choice(s) that was made.

*Consistent behavior resulting in these consequences may result in parent contact and/or office referral.

FITNESS STANDARDS

Fitness Standards:   3rd-5th graders will be tested in each of the 4 Fitness areas during Terms 1, 2, and 3.  The 4 Fitness areas and tests include:

          1.  Cardiorespiratory Endurance (Term 1-Mile Run, Term 2-PACER, Term 3-Choice)

          2.  Muscular Strength (Term 1-Chin-ups, Term 2-Push-ups, Term 3-Choice)

          3.  Flexibility (Term 1, 2, and 3-Sit and Reach)

          4.  Muscular Endurance (Terms 1, 2, and 3-Curl-ups)

At the end of each term, students will receive a Fitness Report that will come home with their report cards.  These reports are designed to provide you and your child the results of each fitness test they complete and how their levels of fitness are measured based on the standards set by Frederick County.  They will receive a Fitness Report each term with all test results from the year on there, which helps you and your child understand if they have improved, maintained, or dropped in any or all areas.  The Report also explains what areas of fitness are being measured with each test, as well as exercises and activities that your child can do regularly in order to improve that fitness area.

There are several things that Coach Sigler and I like to do in order to stress the importance of always striving to improve one's overall physical fitness.  Below are brief descriptions of how we celebrate your child's efforts and improvements:

               1.  Fitness Progress Chart-each student in grades 3-5 will have their own chart.

This chart will have test results of every fitness test that they have ever taken

here at W.E.S.  The students will look at it before each test to see what they how

they performed on the previous set of tests, what their best score is, etc.  This is

a great resource for the students to see their improvement not only over the

course of a school year, but over the course of 3-4 years.  We allow the

graduating 5th graders to take their Progress Charts with them at the end of the

                    school year.

               2.  W.E.S. Fitness Stars-we use our bulletin board in the Gym to display a picture

of each 3rd-5th grader who scored an overall ranking of Healthy Fit or

Outstanding on their 4 fitness tests for each term.  This is an incentive to the

kids that score well on ALL tests (they must get a rubric score of 3 or 4 on all

tests for that term, and they may earn a score of 2 on no more than one test).

The kids really like seeing a picture of themselves on the board for the whole

school to see, as well as their friends from other classes who are on the board.

               3.  Improvement Chart-we have every 3rd-5th grader that improves a fitness score,

whether it's in one area or all areas, sign their name on the Chart.  This is another

incentive for the kids to see how many times they can sign their name (improve

one area=sign name one time, improve three areas=sign name three times, etc.).

We put extra emphasis on this Chart because improvement is what it's all about!

               4.  Fitness Certificates-at the end of the year, we present all 3rd-5th graders who

demonstrated an overall ranking of Healthy Fit or Outstanding for the year with

a certificate signed by the physical education teachers.  We also award those students

who showed significant overall improvement on their fitness scores with a certificate.
