Morning work, attendance, parents notes and dismissal changes Students prepare for the day by unpacking their backpack, turning in their homework and getting ready for the day. Students will choose between reading, drawing, writing and building puzzles.
9:00-9:15 Calendar/ Morning Message We learn math and language skills in the context of our calendar. We build our oral language, phonics, and phonemic awareness through our morning message.
9:15-9:30 Word Study Through poetry, games and direct teaching, students learn about letters, sounds, word parts and words.
9:30-9:45 Whole Group Reading The teacher will provide reading lessons that guide the students as they make meaning of the books they listen to and books they read on their own. Students will build their comprehension, vocabulary and oral language.
9:45-10:50 Small Group Reading The teacher meets with small reading groups to provide focused reading instruction to correspond to individual reading levels. Students rotate through 4 different stations as they practice word study skills, read independently, write with guidance and engage in literacy-based games.
10:55-11:55 Lunch & Recess Students will eat lunch in the cafeteria. Afterwards, students will play games and interact socially with their peers on the kindergarten playground.
12:00-1:00 Math The teacher will introduce new math skills with direct teaching, games, interactive websites and related literature. Students will then practice these particular skills during our math workshops.
Students work individually or with a partner to complete math activities during math workshops. They activities are hands-on and highly engaging. Students LOVE THEM! The teacher will be providing individual instruction or small group instruction during math workshops.
1:00-1:40 Writer’s Workshop The teacher will provide writing lessons to model and guide students as they learn to make meaning through their illustrations and writing. Students will learn to read their own writing and celebrate their writing by sharing it with others.
1:40-2:00 Social Studies/Science Students will engage in learning about earth, physical and life sciences through interactive activities, non-fiction texts, experiments and hands-on discovery. Students will learn about communities, citizenship maps, globes and cultures around the world, to name a few.
2:00-2:40 Specials Monday- PE (please wear sneakers)
Tuesday- Music & Library (bring library book each week)
Wednesday- PE (please wear sneakers)
Thursday- Art & Music
2:40-3:00 Application Centers Students apply their reading, writing and math skills through meaningful play. Social skills are developed and reinforced during this time. Centers include: computers, construction, math, writing, library/listening, art, exploration (science), imagination and read/write around the room.
3:00-3:10 Pack up and Dismissal After coloring their behavior calendar for the day, students will put their completed work and homework in their folders and pack up to go home. They will visit their lockers to retrieve their things, then return to the classroom and wait to be dismissed.
3:10-3:20 Afternoon Meeting Students will reflect on their learning for the day. The teacher will often prompt them to respond to a question, or share something new that they learned.
