Hello! My name is Megan James and I am very excited to begin my second year at Urbana Elementary as the Student Support Specialist!
Originally from Winchester, VA, I received my undergraduate degree in Political Science and Public Administration from Elon University in NC and my Master’s degree in School Counseling from James Madison University in VA. Two years ago, I moved to Frederick from Hillsborough, NC where I worked as an elementary school counselor for two years.
My primary focus as a Student Support Specialist is to work with students, staff and families to remove barriers to student learning so all students can access a rigorous academic curriculum and do their best work at school. I help to identify specific needs of students and assist with developing an appropriate plan to support the student. I assist the school counselor in delivering classroom lessons on various topics to encourage and promote academic, personal/social, and career growth for every child. I facilitate small groups on such topics as Anxiety, Social Skills and Peer Relations, Organization and Study Skills, Self-Esteem, and Anger Management. I meet with students on an individual basis when they are experiencing social, emotional, behavioral or academic difficulties that may be interfering with their learning. I want the students to know that they can always turn to me for help and support at any time.
I believe emphasizing a child's unique strengths and creating a strong home/school partnership enables a student to reach his or her best potential for learning and success in school and in life. I utilize a strengths-based approach in my work with students that focuses on building resiliency skills such as creative problem solving, brainstorming, emotional regulation/self-monitoring, goal setting, critical thinking, reflection, and pro-social skills.
Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns. You can reach me by phone at 240-236-2209 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
When I’m not at school, I love to read and travel with my husband. Whenever possible I like to be doing things outside like walking my dog, hiking, camping and fishing. Although not from Pittsburgh originally, I am a third generation Steelers fan (although I’ll also root for the Redskins if they aren’t playing the Steelers). I look forward to working with the students, staff and families at UES to make this year the best it can be for ALL students!
