Welcome to Second Grade Math!

We will be working on these math skills throughout the year in Second Grade:

  • Reading and writing numbers to 1,000 using numerals, number names, and expanded form
  • Understanding 3 digit place value:  value of each digit
  • Composing and decomposing 100 in many ways
  • Skip counting by 5's, 10's, and 100's from any number up to 1,000
  • Mentally adding or subtracting 10  or 100 from any given number up to 900.
  • Adding and subtracting two 2 digit numbers with strategies based on place value
  • Adding and subtracting within 1000, using models or drawings based on place value
  • Explaining why addition and subtraction strategies work
  • Adding up to four 2 digit numbers using strategies based on place value
  •  Comparing two 3 digit numbers based on the hundreds, tens, and ones digits
  • Using addition to find the total number of objects in rectangualar arrays
  • Estimating and measuring  the length of an object, using appropriate tools
  • Determining the how much longer one object is than another
  • Using addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths
  • Drawing a picture or bar graph to represent data up to four categories
  • Generating measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects and showing the measurements by making a line plot
  • Telling and writing time from an analog and digital clock to the nearest 5 min., using a.m. and p.m.
  • Identifying the coins and their values up to $10
  • Counting sets of coins up to $10 and using money symbols appropriately
  • Solving one and two step story problems with addition and subtraction up to 100
  • Recognizing, identifying attributes, and drawing shapes for both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional
  • Partitioning rectangles into rows and columns of equal size to find the total number
  • Partitioning circles and rectangles into 2, 3, or 4 equal shares, describing the shares in words (halves, thirds, fourths)
  • Fluently adding and subtracting within 20, using mental math strategies
