We will be working on these math skills throughout the year in Second Grade:
- Reading and writing numbers to 1,000 using numerals, number names, and expanded form
- Understanding 3 digit place value: value of each digit
- Composing and decomposing 100 in many ways
- Skip counting by 5's, 10's, and 100's from any number up to 1,000
- Mentally adding or subtracting 10 or 100 from any given number up to 900.
- Adding and subtracting two 2 digit numbers with strategies based on place value
- Adding and subtracting within 1000, using models or drawings based on place value
- Explaining why addition and subtraction strategies work
- Adding up to four 2 digit numbers using strategies based on place value
- Comparing two 3 digit numbers based on the hundreds, tens, and ones digits
- Using addition to find the total number of objects in rectangualar arrays
- Estimating and measuring the length of an object, using appropriate tools
- Determining the how much longer one object is than another
- Using addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths
- Drawing a picture or bar graph to represent data up to four categories
- Generating measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects and showing the measurements by making a line plot
- Telling and writing time from an analog and digital clock to the nearest 5 min., using a.m. and p.m.
- Identifying the coins and their values up to $10
- Counting sets of coins up to $10 and using money symbols appropriately
- Solving one and two step story problems with addition and subtraction up to 100
- Recognizing, identifying attributes, and drawing shapes for both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional
- Partitioning rectangles into rows and columns of equal size to find the total number
- Partitioning circles and rectangles into 2, 3, or 4 equal shares, describing the shares in words (halves, thirds, fourths)
- Fluently adding and subtracting within 20, using mental math strategies
