FAQ

A: The Department of Technology Infrastructure uses the money collected to support ongoing device maintenance efforts. Funds are primarily used to purchase parts and replacement Chromebooks.

A: FCPS uses a web filter designed for use in educational settings. Like any web filter on the market though it can be breached, and it is important to teach your student safe use of the internet.

A: FCPS policy is that staff are not responsible for and do not support personal devices.  Personal devices are the property and the responsibility of the student and family. FCPS staff is limited in their ability to help with personal devices. FCPS can assist with basic troubleshooting but major issues are the responsibility of the student and family.

A: FCPS Chromebooks are managed by the Department of Technology Infrastructure (DTI). DTI deploys specific software and policies to FCPS owned Chromebooks. Only FCPS managed Chromebooks may be used for state mandated testing. FCPS policy is that staff are not responsible for and do not support personal devices.  Personal devices are the property and the responsibility of the student and family. FCPS staff are limited in their ability to help with personal devices. FCPS can assist with basic troubleshooting but major issues are the responsibility of the student and family.

A: Please file a police report for any stolen devices.  See your school administration for the next step in accordance with the Device User Agreement.

A: This question should be discussed with your school administration.

A: We recommend using the Chromebook provided by the school.  However, if you choose not to participate, please consider purchasing a Chromebook over a laptop or a tablet.

A: FCPS does not support personal devices. FCPS staff are limited in their ability to help with personal devices. For FCPS devices, all technical questions should go through staff at the school.  A troubleshooting guide has been provided to the school and can be found here.

A: We hope that our 1:1 Chromebook program will help students learn and maintain good digital habits that will last a lifetime. Any rules that you have about computer use or Internet access should apply equally to your student’s Chromebook use. However, please keep in mind that more class content will be digitized and accessed via the Chromebook. This may require students to extend their screen time to meet course requirements.

 

A: FCPS provides a troubleshooting guide to assist with basic connection problems. If the student continues to experience issues, they should contact their internet service provider.

A: Yes, FCPS Chromebooks can be used on other WiFi networks.

A: The device is to be used for educational purposes only by the student to whom it is issued.

A: Yes.  Damage caused while the device is out of the case is considered intentional damage.

A: Please speak to your User Support Specialist or technology support staff about replacements

A: No, FCPS encourages a paper-less environment where possible.  Printing is not possible on Chromebooks over the FCPS network.

A: Some students might find the use of a mouse beneficial over the use of the touch pad on the device. Earbuds or other headphone devices may also be useful, but these accessories will not be provided by the district.

A: Using the following combination of keys:

  • Zoom Out:  Ctrl and --
  • Zoom In:  Ctrl and +
  • Reset Zoom:  Ctrl and 0

Fix #1: Make sure the headphone are securely plugged in.

Fix #2: Try a different set of headphones or earbuds.

Fix #3: The “close lid” solution:

  1. Unplug your headphones.
  2. Close the lid of the chromebook and wait ten seconds.
  3. Plug in the headphones.
  4. Open the lid. The chromebook will re-scan for audio devices and should find your headphones.

OR, if that doesn’t work:

  1. Turn off your chromebook.
  2. Plug in the headphones.
  3. Turn on the chromebook. The chromebook will re-scan for audio devices on startup and should find your headphones.
