Movies: Mr. Owen's Favorite American History Films

STUDENTS AND PARENTS
Here is a list of some of my favorite history movies.  Parents, it is your decision to approve/disapprove whether these films are appropriate for your child. Some of the movies are rated PG, PG-13 and some may be R.  I suggest you preview them before letting your son/daughter watch them.

The IMDb website will give your a review of each of the films and  IMDB.COM.  Click on the name of the movie and it will forward you to the IMDB review. In addition, it will include parental guidance for the film.

French and Indian War
LAST of THE MOHICANS  My favorite movie about this time period is "The Last of the Mohicans"

American Revolution
THE PATRIOT The Patriot is a great action movie set during the American Revolution.  Not very historically accurate,  but a great movie to see colonial period costumes and warfare.

Westward Expansion
DANCES WITH WOLVES Your going to need an afternoon for this one, but check out, "Dances With Wolves".  This is an excellent movie that will show you what life was like in the west before Westward Expansion.  In addition, you will understand the struggle of a Civil War soldier trying to deal with the horrors of war, but at the same time gains a deep appreciation for the culture of the American Indian.  One of my favorite scenes is the Buffalo hunt!

SILVERADO-  This is just a great old style American Western!!

THE ALAMO-
Not the best movie, but if you are interested in the Alamo, you may enjoy it.

Civil War
GLORY We're going to watch the student version of this film in school.  This is an outstanding depiction of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment.

LINCOLN

CIVIL WAR TRILOGY  GODS and GENERALS / KILLER ANGELS / The LAST FULL MEASURE

WORLD WAR I
GALLIPOLI

WORLD WAR II
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN- Best war movie every made.

FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS and LETTERS from IWO JIMA
Clint Eastwood directed both of these films.  Studying POINT of View in the Language Arts?  Flags of our Fathers is from the point of view of the American soldier during the war in the Pacific.  Letters of Iwo Jima is from the perspective of the Japanese soldier.

BAND OF BROTHERS
This was a great mini-series on HBO.  It is story of Easy Company of the US Army 101st Airborne division and their mission in WWII Europe from Operation Overlord through V-J Day.

PEARL HARBOR Pearl Harbor follows the story of two best friends, Rafe and Danny, and their love lives as they go off to join the war.  Not the best movie, but I can watch a history action movie and Mrs. Lisa can watch a love story.  Sometimes gentlemen, you have to compromise!!  It could be worse, you could be watching a Nicholas Sparks movie!!

Master and Commander
Horatio Hornblower
