November 1, 2011

Next week we will be focusing on the new word wall word: for. The letter we will be discussing is F. Next week we are also going to begin learning about word families. (a.k.a word chunks) “At” will be our first word family. This means we will learn how to blend a beginning sound to the word “at” to make new words. For example, I may say, “if we know what sound f makes and the word “at” then we know f and at makes fat!” We will even learn how to blend nonsense words such as “yat” or “jat”. In mathematics we will begin a unit on measurement. Your children will be expected to directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of/less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter. Next week in Social Studies we will be having discussions about personal safety.

Ideas for at home:
·        Give your child a sound and have them blend it with “at”, even using silly blends such as zat, yat or xat.
·        Compare the length of your forearm to the length of your shoe using legos or string to measure. Is it longer, shorter or the same length?
·        Find out who has the longest name in your family and who has the shortest.
·        Using a scale see who weighs the most in your family and who weighs the least.
