Middletown won its third consecutive match, downing Clear Spring 3-1 Tuesday evening. The hosts will next entertain TJ on Thursday.
The first half saw the visiting Blazers come out full of energy before the Knights took control from the penalty spot. Scott McMunn was fouled in the box on a corner kick, and Zach Fontenot stepped up to power in the resulting spot kick. 1-0 MHS!
The next goal also came from a PK, an unusual occurrence in a single match. This time it was great play through the midfield that eventually sent Fontenot in 1v1 against the CSHS goalkeeper. After rounding the keeper, Fontenot was brought down and earned himself a second trip to the penalty spot. Once again, Fontenot connected. 2-0!
The second half saw Clear Spring refreshed and looking menacing, but the Knights also creating their share of chances. A weird skip off the turf hit the post for CSHS while a thundering header from John Remsberg clanged off the crossbar. Jonatan Juarez's follow-up was cleared off the endline, keeping the score at 2-0. This momentum shift led the Blazers to feel they had new life. Minutes later, the cut the lead to 2-1.
Less than three minutes was all the Knights needed to respond and put away the game. Josh Greene worked to the endline, hitting a low cross across goal for Fontenot's nicely taken one-time finish. 3-0 Knights and a hat trick for Fontenot!
The defense and goalkeeper David Burgenson gave another strong performance and the Knights look to continue their momentum when the red-hot TJ Patriots come into MHS Stadium Thursday. Good luck Knights!
