Middletown withstood a strong Oakdale opening 25 minutes before a late first half flurry saw the Knights put four goals together in less than 15 minutes time. MHS went on to win 6-1 Monday at OHS.
The Bears opened the team the aggressor and if not for several great tackles by the back line and several saves from Shane Falcinelli, OHS would've been in the lead. But the final minutes of the first half may have signaled the rebirth of the Knights. Jacob Hargett's long ball was won in the air by Gary Higginbothem into space for Zach Fontenot to run on to and calmly finish into the net. 1-0!
Higginbothem again got things started by bringing a corner kick back across the goal mouth, finding Matt Nickols' whose header was saved nicely by the OHS goalie. Scott McMunn was there to pounce on the rebound however, and the Knights doubled their lead within three minutes. 2-0!
Another goal mouth scrum led to the third goal. Mike Zaycer went up to win a header, setting up Josh Greene for a far post finish. 3-0!
Before the half was done, Greene would add another far post finish, this time set up by Fontenot. 4-0 at the half!
MHS knew its work wasn't done and sure enough Oakdale was soon threatening again. After withstanding the home team's pressure, the visiting Black and Orange found the net again, this time from a wicked upper 90 shot from Fontenot. 5-0!
After giving up a goal, the Knights responded well by finishing off a Higginbothem free kick. Jordan Milhous got a toe on the ball to keep it alive for John Remsberg to finish. In all, it was a strong performance against a very good team. Up next for Middletown is a trip to North Hagerstown on Friday. Good luck Knights!
