Frederick used a quickly struck free kick to beat Middletown 2-1 in an MVAL divisional matchup Thursday evening.
After a shaky start saw the Black and Orange goalkeeper Shane Falcinelli have to make a diving save, MHS settled in to create several dangerous chances in the first half. Finally, a wild sequence in the box put the visiting Knights up 1-0. After the ball was worked into the left corner, Jonathan Wolf sent a cross that Jacob Hargett headed into the goal area. After the save, the ball came loose to Jonatan Juarez whose rebound shot appeared to come close to going over the line. A Cadet defender cleared the ball from the line but into the path of a charging John Remsberg who pounded the ball into the net.
Unfortunately, in the final seconds of the first half, FHS sent a long ball from midfield into the path of a streaking striker. After being pushed to his right the striker hit a low shot into the far post netting. 1-1 at the half.
The second was barely underway when a foul gave Frederick a free kick in a dangerous scoring area. Taking the free kick before Middletown had fully set was just the advantage needed to put the past a diving Falcinelli. The 2-1 scoreline held up despite numerous chances by the Knights late to tie.
After a tough week the schedule doesn't get any easier, with a trip to defending 2A West Region Finalist South Carroll. Good luck Knights!
