United States Youth Conservation Corps

Harpers Ferry National Historical APark is looking for energetic 15-18 year-old students to enjoy a summer working in the part through participation in the Youth Conservation Corps program.  Interpretation positions are available for work in this 8-week program from June 18 through August 12.  Schedules will vary. Pay is $9 per hour.

National Aquarium Summer 2018 (unpaid) NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS for Summer 2017

Students interested in spending an exciting summer learning about marine biology and conservation may want to consider applying for the 2018 Student Summer Program at the National Aquarium in Baltimore.  Intensive training is held on Saturdays in March and April. Participants must commit to volunteer at least 100 hours during the summer.  This is an excellent opportunity to meet people from all over the world, develop confidence speaking with people, and have fun.  Application packets will be available in October of 2017.

National Cancer Institute-NCI Internships(stipend) Applications will be available in Oct. 2017

Juniors with a strong interest in science or medicine may want to apply for the Werner H. Kirsten Student Internship Program at NCI.  These challenging internships require a full one-year commitment, beginning in June of 2018.  Selected students receive full-time training during the summer for a stipend and then devote half their school day to the internship during the senior year for weighted high school credits.  For information, go to

USAMRIID Internships (stipend)

The United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Ft. Detrick is now accepting applicants for their internships that will begin the summer of 2017.  This opportunity is very similar to the Werner H. Kirsten Student Intern Program, but it requires a separate application.  To apply, students must be a junior, 17 years old before June 19, 2017, and a U.S. citizen.  This is a yearlong internship with eight weeks of full-time summer training. The internship continues for two periods both semesters the senior year for weighted credit.  Click on the links below for application details.

NCI Summer Internships (only 8 weeks with stipend)

The National Cancer Institute offers 8-week summer internships to students interested in science.  This is separate from the yearlong Werner H. Kirsten Internship Program and requires a separate application.  To apply, students must be 16 years old by June 15, 2017. Graduating senrios may also apply.  Students who are applying for the Werner H. Kirsten Internship Program will want to also apply for the Summer Internship Program.

Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (Summer)

The Army Educational Outreach Program offers many opportunities for students.  Check out summer apprenticeships available to incoming 9th graders - graduating seniors.  The goals are to acquaint qualified high school students with the activities of Department of Defense laboratories through summer research and engineering experiences.  These experiences provide students with opportunities in and exposure to scientific and engineering practices and personnel not available in their school environment.  Deadline to apply varies by opportunitiy.  For more information, click link below:
