My name is Laura Jones and I am the counselor at Kemptown Elementary School. Many of you may not have had a school counselor when you were in school. For those of you who did, there is a good possibility that counselors have different functions than they did ten or twenty years ago.
First and foremost, it is my responsibility to help your child get the best possible education. A good education includes not only learning to read, write, and do math, but also includes learning good social skills. This means, among other things, learning how to get along with other children, making good decisions, controlling anger, accepting responsibility, and being aware of strengths and weaknesses. Many of these skills are taught at home. It is my intent to supplement the learning from home through individual counseling, small groups and classroom lessons.
I am also here to help students who are facing particular difficulties. Family disruptions such as illness, death, or divorce may affect children at school. If your family is experiencing anything out of the ordinary, please let me know. If I am aware of any special problems your child(ren) may be facing, I can better assist them.
It is important to remember that when school personnel and parents work together, it is a winning combination for children.
If I can be of any help to you, please call (240) 236-3508 or e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I am excited about working with the children and families of Kemptown Elementary.
