At CMES we encourage our students to be present at school if at all possible. It is important for students to be at school to learn new material. reinforce skills, and maintain consistency with learning. We understand, though, that sometimes students must miss a day of school due to unforseen circumstances or illness. When this occurs, we ask that you send a note to school when your child returns stating the reason for the absence. Students who are absent from school have the responsibility to request make up work within two days of their return.
According to Maryland law, the following reasons for absence are considered lawful:
- Student Illness
- Death in the Immediate Family
- Court Summons for the Student
- Hazardous Weather Condidion
- Work or Activity Accepted by the School Authorities
- Observance of a Religious Holiday
- State Emergency
- Lack of Authorized Transportation
- Health Exclusion
Students who take trips with their parents may be excused no more than twice during a school year for a maximum combined total of 5 days.
Students are counted present for a full school day of the student is in attendance four hours or more of the school day. Students are counted present for a half day if the student is in attendance for at least two hours but less than four hours.
