James Erard

Upper Elementary Teacher
James.Erard@fcps.org

James ErardI grew up on a small organic farm in New Hampshire. I easily trace my love of the outdoors, science and tinkering to my upbringing. I have lived and traveled over much of the world but living in Maryland feels right.

I graduated from Connecticut College in 1997 with a good understanding of three things: DNA replication; my education will never end; life is more interesting when you look for commonality. These lessons led me away from science labs and toward more creative, hands-on projects.

My path to teaching in a classroom is circuitous, but helping others learn has been a part of my most rewarding jobs. After working at a science museum in San Francisco, in the facilities department on an island off New Hampshire’s coast, and as a marine engineer on a sailing school schooner, I formalized my teaching career with a Master’s degree in integrated elementary curriculum from Antioch University New England in 2008. I taught Fourth Grade in Loudoun County and range of years as a substitute in Pittsburgh while staying home with our daughter and working at the Carnegie Science Center. For the last two years, I was the Second Grade teacher at Lucy School.

I am very excited to be a part of Carroll Creek Montessori because I am inspired by the exuberance of young, creative learners when they make discoveries for themselves.
