Digital Citizenship

With advances in computer technology, even very young children know how to hit the information highway running– leaving them open to the dangers of the Internet such as bullying, exploitation and potential abuse. Sometimes people (children and adults) put themselves in Internet danger without even realizing that it is happening. Certain websites are also prone to hackers and spyware.

Suggestions to Use Technology Responsibly at Home:
- Does your family have a set of rules or an agreement for appropriate Internet use?
- Do your kids know to ask permission before submitting personal information online?
- Do you make Internet use a family activity by guiding your kids to good sites and teaching them how to perform safe web searches?
- Is your computer placed in a well-used public area of your home, such as the kitchen or family room?
- If your child has his/her own website, Facebook account, YouTube channel, or Instagram account, have you checked it to make sure it doesn't contain personal information (like name, age and location) that could identify him/her?
- Do you know your child's email address and any passwords? For security reasons, you should be able to access your child's accounts at any time. Having a list of their passwords and randomly checking in on their accounts would be helpful.
