3rd Grade Newsletter May/June

3rd Grade’s May/June Express…
We have many exciting activities going on in the 3rd grade the next month!
In April, we successfully achieved our Titanic STEM project (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). The students did a wonderful job creating their ‘unsinkable’ ships in collaborative groups. We also celebrated National Poetry Month by creating a Poetry Pocket to share a favorite poem!
During May and the first week of June, the students will be wrapping up their 3rd grade experiences by completing a Biography about someone influential in history and increasing our love of literacy by engaging in Literature Circles.
We will also be strengthening our fluency and comprehension skills! Help your child by having them read to you out loud! Then, ask them questions about what they have read to you to ensure their understanding.
Please continue independent reading time at home! As our students near the end of the school year, we are trying to prepare them for even more Literacy Success! We want to stress the importance of reading at least 5-10 minutes a night in addition to homework. You can find many creative ways of reading. Some of these ways include:
Reading grocery lists
Reading articles from the paper
Playing a memory game with what they have just read
Reading the backs of cereal boxes
Have your child read recipes
Don’t forget- the planner is a useful tool for communication between parents and teachers. Be sure to check your child’s planner every day. Of course, we always encourage you to write or call with comments or concerns as well. As a reminder, May 18th is no school for students due to the G8 Summit. Also, the last day for students will be a 2 hour early dismissal on Friday, June 8th, 2012.
