A little about me:
This is my 11th year teaching in Frederick County, and my 3rd at Ballenger Creek Middle. I received my undergraduate degree from Shepherd University in Secondary Education and my graduate degree from Hood College in Curriculum and Instruction. Health and P.E. are very important to me and it's my hope I can instill that interest in your child. We teach a variety of lessons which aim to increase interest and knowledge. A syllabus containing more information will be sent home the first day of school (or term). There is also a link to our syllabus at the top right corner of this page. > Course Objectives
1. Students will demonstrate the ability to enhance their performance of a variety of physical skills by developing fundamental movement skills, combining skills effectively, and applying skills.
2. Students will demonstrate an ability to use the principles of biomechanics to generate and control force to improve their movement effectiveness and safety.
3. Students will demonstrate the ability to use motor skill principles to learn and develop proficiency through frequent practice opportunities in which skills are repeatedly performed correctly in a variety of situations.
4. Students will demonstrate the ability to use the principles of exercise physical, social psychology, and biomechanics to design and adhere to a regular, purposeful program of physical activity consistent with their health, performance, and fitness goals in order to gain health and cognitive/academic benefits.
5. Students will demonstrate the ability to use skills essential for developing self-efficacy, fostering a sense of community, and working effectively with others in physical activity settings.
> Grading Policy
Ballenger Creek Middle encourages parents to regularly check their student's’ grades on HAC. The following list of codes is provided to help parents better understand the Home Access Center (HAC) grading program.
• An “E” is issued to excuse work. (This neither hurts nor helps a student’s grade.)
• A “Z” is used by teachers to let parents know that an assignment has never been turned in. (The “Z” counts as a zero in the student’s grade in order to give an accurate reflection of what the grade will be if the assignment is never turned in.)
• An actual “0” in a grade book signifies that a student earned a zero on the assignment.
1) Meets Daily Objectives (earned daily): 60%
10 Points 100% Vigorous Effort (energetic, forceful, powerful, vigorously engaged all class activities)
8-9 Points 80% Active Effort (lively, busy, actively engaged in class activity)
6-7 Points 65% Participating Effort (minimally engages in all class activities)
5 Points 50% Partial Effort (engages in only some of class activities)
0 Points 0% Non-Participation (disengaged in all or most class activities)

2) Exit Outcome Assessments: 35%
Students will demonstrate competency in the Exit Outcomes for physical education as defined by the Office of Secondary Physical Education for Frederick County Public Schools. Assessments will vary, based upon the unit and/or activities that are presented including Fitness Testing.
Homework will include assignments posted on Google Classroom.

> Rules and Regulations
1. All students will get a school issued lock for their PE locker.
2. No food, gum, candy or drinks allowed in the gym or locker rooms.
3. Vandalism is NOT tolerated. All equipment will be used respectfully. Misuse of equipment will result in a detention and the student will assume the cost of any broken equipment.
4. Respect the rights of all individuals in class. It is an expectation that all students will treat each other’s differences with respect and dignity. It is also expected that students and teachers will treat each other with dignity and respect.
> Locker Room Procedures & Expectations
1. When entering the locker room: Open lock, change into P.E. uniform, remove all
jewelry, place clothes, other shoes and books into your locker, LOCK locker!
2. At the end of class, change back into school clothes, put uniform back into your
small locker. LOCK YOUR LOCKER !!
3. It is recommended that each student keep a roll on deodorant in their P.E. locker.
Aerosol spray containers as well as glass containers are NOT allowed.
4. Students have 5 minutes from the time the bell rings to change and go out to the
gym and sit in their attendance line. If the student is not in their attendance line by
that time, they will be considered late. If it becomes an issue it will result in a lunch detention.
5. Have respect for other students as well as your surroundings while in the locker
room. Be responsible and accountable. Throw out trash you see on floor!
6. If you find something that does not belong to you (such as a P.E uniform, shoes,
jewelry, books, etc.) let a P.E. Teacher know or place the item in the designated Lost
and Found area in your locker room. We are NOT responsible for any lost items.
> PE Uniform Expectations
All students are expected to dress in their P.E. uniform EVERY day (if you do not dress, you are still expected to participate)

Any student out of P.E for a length of time (2 weeks or more), due to a medical condition with a doctor’s note, may be assigned a written assignment for that unit.
The student will be required to complete a Physical Education written project for the duration of their time out of class in order to earn their P.E. grade for that time period.
If a child comes to class with a note from home excusing them from P.E., they will be excused for that day only. A different parent note will need to be written each day, for up to a total of 3 days.
