Hello, Ballenger Bobcat community!
This is my tenth year as the literacy specialist at Ballenger Creek Elementary. I live in the Ballenger area -- all three of my sons attended BCES! It’s a special privilege to work with the children from my community.
The big goals of my job are sharing the love of good books, developing reading skills, and building communication skills. In professional development I help teachers navigate curriculum, apply best practices, and match resources to students. When I work with students, it’s sometimes to develop skills and sometimes it’s to push kids who need extra challenge.
The part of my job I love most is reading a great book with kids. Some of my very favorites are:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle -- It’s a classic: days of the week, counting, cause and effect...every child needs it read to him or her at least a hundred times!
Ish by Peter Reynolds --It’s a simple story that has so much to teach us about looking at life with a growth mindset!
The Miraculous Journey of Edward Toulane by Kate DiCamillo -- Watching the main character grow and feeling ourselves grow with him makes it a special read.
Wonder by R.J. Polacco -- Reading about a child’s struggles and triumphs through the different voices of the people who love him opens us up to consider others’ perspectives.
What’s your favorite book???
