Principal's Message

May/June 2013

Hello WHS Parents, Students and Staff:

As we come to the end of another school year, we first and foremost recognize the achievements of the Class of 2013. Our graduating seniors have worked diligently during their high school years. Our entire faculty and staff wish them only the best as they go forth from WHS.

As we start the beginning of the fourth term, we begin to prepare for end-of-the-year events including Prom and Graduation. The Prom was held on May 3rd at the FSK Holiday Inn and Graduation is set for June 5th at Mount St. Mary’s University. This is a good time of year for parents to discuss the topic of underage drinking with your child as well. It is never too early or too often to talk with your children about the dangers associated with drinking and driving and about making wise choices. We want to ensure a safe Prom and Graduation season for all of our students.

However, before graduation, there is still much work left to be done this year. More than half of our students will be taking important state and national tests in May. These tests are rigorous state high school assessments (H.S.A.) that allow students to meet graduation requirements. The national college-level exams serve as “capstones” for AP courses. Students seeking additional assistance in preparation for these exams should check with their individual HSA and AP teachers. Parents are encouraged to check their children’s grades online often and to contact teachers at the first sign of concern.

As part of an ongoing system initiative to provide wireless technology infrastructure in all schools and facilities in our school system, Walkersville High School will be receiving wireless infrastructure (Wi-Fi). FCPS is currently piloting wireless projects at three schools. Each of those schools will provide valuable information and feedback that will benefit both student and staff use of this technology. Stay tuned for more details about how WHS will be utilizing our wireless network.

Also, at this time of year we in education are often reminded of all that has been accomplished for and by our students during the year. Our school of 1135 students and staff members could not possibly do it all by ourselves. The thousands of hours donated by parents to keep our school and programs running efficiently are almost too numerous to count, but are vital to our mission to provide the best possible opportunities for each student. Please know that we are forever thankful for your efforts!

Our spring sports teams are in competition right now and we welcome all members of the community to join us to watch the Lion athletes compete.

Again, we wish the seniors a safe and happy graduation season. We look forward to welcoming everyone else back in August. Have a restful summer.

Sincerely,
