ANTHONY J.  RAMIENSKI

It’s this simple: "Learn by doing, keep it moving and give a damn".

Information as of 20 June 2016

It’s this simple:

"Learn by doing, keep it moving and give a damn".

Today, Monday, 20 June 2016, is my last day of work. I am retiring from teaching after eleven years of hard; yet rewarding labor at Tuscarora High School. I have taught Modern World History over 50 times. I have taught in all some 1700 students. I loved my students-all of them-unconditionally. I saw my work as a vocation to explain, enlighten and assist in discovery. What always motivated me to do my best was that belief that in 13 years of education, this would be their only time to see the development of the Modern World. If at times I appeared grim and determined-I was. Given the curriculum, I mostly had one to two days at best to explain some of the most complex events in history-“The Thirty Years War in 30 minutes” – or less. I went in everyday determined to be the best and give 100%.

As there is a time to begin; so there is a time to end. I am tired, and need to rest. I have done pretty much what I wanted to do in life-study history, serve as a soldier, and finally teach. I have seen war, and now prefer to see peace. I will always be proud of my service with the 82nd Airborne Division:  Ninety Four parachute jumps and combat service twice. I am also proud of my service in Military Intelligence. I did what I set out to do with my life. I have had many adventures and visited many places. I plan to do more as I now begin the final act of my own personal adaptation of Our Town. The curtain will soon come up on the last act as I step on the stage. The Stage Manager will tap his watch and wink. I hope the act will have several scenes and many lines.

I thank my parents for all their sacrifices. I thank my late uncle, Thaddeus Sochacki, who inspired me to become a teacher of History and live a life of the mind. I thank my wife Katherine, who for 39 plus years has stood by my side encouraging me and providing a 41 year long example of what it takes to be a great teacher. Of course I thank my children Dorothy and Joseph-they too always believed in me.  I am proud of them both. I felt honored to be a member of the Tuscarora High School Social Studies Department. I am truly sad to leave and will miss the daily lunches we had together.

The time has come to say good bye. I leave you with two thoughts: First, paraphrasing Theodore Roosevelt, “Dare to do Mighty Things.” Do not ever stand with those “who could have …but didn’t…” Get into the arena and “do”. And second, from the poet Yeats, “Cast a cold eye on Life…on Death…Horseman pass by…”

Be the number one jumper … go on the green light…

Good bye and good luck…
